MUMBAI: The police arrested a notorious cable operator, Mandar Borkar, who is allegedly associated with the Chhota Rajan gang, on Friday for attempting to kill a Dahisar bar owner near a local court recently.
The bar owner, Rashmikant Vyas aka Lala Seth, along with his other staff had been arrested earlier for rioting after a fight with a miscreant, Satya Shinde, who is associated with Borkar, at the bar.
Satya and his friends were allegedly misbehaving with the female staff. When the staff objected, a fight broke out between the bar staffers and Shinde.
The police produced Vyas and others before the Borivli magistrate's court and they were released on bail. Vyas was near to his parked vehicle when a group of seven armed men along with Borkar and Shinde attacked him with swords and hockey sticks last month.
The accused damaged Vyas's vehicle and fled after a crowd gathered at the spot. Vyas's son was with him and with the help of passersby he rushed the father to Bhagwati Hospital. Vyas was discharged after the treatment and
The Borivli police booked Borkar, Shinde and their aides for attempt to murder.
Zonal deputy commissioner of police, Mahesh Patil, said, "Borkar has a criminal past. We are questioning the other accused."
Shinde got anticipatory bail in the case. On early Friday, the police learnt that Mandar was coming at a bar from where they picked him in the case.
Borkar was produced before the court on Friday and remanded in police custody for six days.
There were ten extortion cases registered against Mandar. He was earlier in the news when he along with Raja Kadam, son of former don Nandu Kadam, had issued threats and extorted money from a builder on behalf of fugitive gangster Guru Satam.
The crime branch arrested Kadam in the case and Mandar became underground. After few months Mandar surrendered before the crime branch. The police had booked the accused under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) in the case in order to put control on their activities. However later the stringent act was dropped as police failed to prove the charges and Mandar was released on bail in the case.
